Ukraine's Ministry for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons says the Kerch Strait Bridge Illegally built by Russia in annexed Crimea to connect the occupied peninsula with mainland Russia has started subsiding, as evidenced by space imagery.

"In the area of the artificially built embankment from the side of the Crimean peninsula, there are facilities that vertically displace at a speed of 89 millimeters (subsidence) to 52 millimeters per year (elevation) [an image in the blue frame]," the ministry wrote on Facebook on November 20.

"In the central part of the bridge, the arch of the railway line is rising at a speed of up to 30 millimeters per year. However, the arch of the lane for vehicles sags at a speed of up to 32 millimeters per year [an image in the red frame]," it said.

In addition, there are two dangerous areas on Tuzla Island.

The first part of the spit sags at a speed of 10 to 90 millimeters per year [an image in the blue frame], the ministry said.

"The second area is where facilities, located near the bridge section, subside at a speed of up to 83 millimeters per year [an image in the red frame]," the report said.

According to experts, the detected vertical displacements of the bridge arches indicate instability of the seabed where the piers are set. Moreover, they affect the Black Sea area, and may pose a threat to the health and life of people.

"Difficult weather conditions, especially in winter, in a seismically unstable region can exacerbate destabilizing factors that affect the stability of the Kerch Strait Bridge," the experts said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a span of the railway part of the Crimean bridge under construction on October 4 slid into the water during installation works.

It turned out that the iron sheets on the bridge, where a jack was mounted, were not fixed between themselves and with the main structure. As a result, the jack shifted to the side, which caused the collapse. A technical malfunction of the jack was reported as an official theory.
