Ukraine and Slovakia leaders spoke about coordinating efforts to counter the pipeline construction.
Slovak President Andrej Kiska claims that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea is an exclusively political, not an economic project.
“As for Nord Stream, Slovakia has always emphasized that Nord Stream 2 is not an economic project, but a political project. And this is very important to understand while someone constantly repeats that this is just a business project. It's not. Absolutely not. This is only a political project," Kiska said during his joint presss conference with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Kyiv Friday following the meeting of the two leaders.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Poland is another European nation opposing the gas pipeline project. Warsaw sees stopping Nord Stream 2 as its top priority.
In turn, President Poroshenko said: “We held a dialogue to coordinate our efforts to prevent the construction of the absolutely politically motivated Russian project Nord Stream 2.”
Poroshenko noted that he has a joint position with the Slovak President on the project. “In the future, we have firm intentions to coordinate our actions," said the head of the Ukrainian state.
UNIAN memo. The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction and operation of two gas pipeline branches with a total throughput capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
This new pipeline bypassing Ukraine is to be built next to the existing Nord Stream 1 pipeline. The construction of the pipeline should be completed before the end of 2019. The length of the pipeline will be 1,220 km. It should connect Russia's Ust-Luga and Germany's Greifswald.
