Daniel Bekker, an ethnic Ukrainian living and working in Australia, who was late for his plane because of a recent breakdown of the Kyiv-Boryspil Express, a high-speed railway line between Kyiv's central station and Ukraine's largest state-owned Boryspil International Airport located outside the capital, has been paid full compensation for his plane ticket.

"I stayed overnight with my friends living near the Vokzalna subway station. That was why I decided to take the brand new express rail bus... After that [the incident], in the morning, they sent a car to pick up and bring me to [the office of Ukrainian state-run railways operator JSC] Ukrzaliznytsia. I filed an application there and got compensation for the full price of the ticket in the national currency [the hryvnia] at the 'sell' rate. I exchanged it for US$550 [the price of a new plane ticket]. Then the car with the driver from Ukrzaliznytsia took me to the airport. Now I'm waiting for departure," he told the Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske.

The man flew from Kyiv through Doha, Qatar, to Australia where he works. As reported, his transfer ticket was also changed.

According to Bekker, he missed one working day as a result of the incident. "However, given the circumstances, they, at my work, showed understanding," he added.

As was earlier reported, Kyiv-Boryspil Express broke down on the second day after its launch. To catch their flights, some passengers chose to get out of the rail bus to get to the airport.
