Russia has once again postponed the commissioning of the railway service via the Kerch Strait bridge over miscalculations in the blueprints of railway approaches to the bridge linking the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia.

"Due to engineers' miscalculations, the occupying authorities will have to allocate additional RUB 3 billion [US$44 million] to complete the construction of the railway approaches to the Kerch Strait bridge, as is seen from Russian government order No. 2957-r of December 27, 2018," the press service of Ukraine's Ministry for Temporary Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons said on January 3.

"It turned out that the existing terrain cannot be used to build up an embankment under the railroad track. During the construction, it was established that the actual properties of the ground significantly differ from those used for the estimates," the report said.

In 2018, there were also rock shifts in the railway tunnel, which is being built near the village of Oktiabrske, in the area of archaeological excavations of Biy Eli. As a result, the support constructions of the tunnel were damaged.

"This is the cause behind the delay in all construction works, including the cancellation of a tender for the electrification of the railway bridge across the Kerch Strait," the press service added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the de-facto authorities in Russian-occupied Crimea on December 31 opened a 70-kilometer section of the new Taurida highway from the village of Batalne to the city of Kerch (both in the east of Crimea).
