Ukraine in 2019 should begin a deep modernization program for its T-64 main battle tanks, the core of the country's tank fleet, director of Defense Express consulting company Serhiy Zgurets told UNIAN.
“My opinion is that we need to increase the efficiency of tanks that are already on the battlefield in sufficient numbers. In 2019, we have to start a deep modernization program for T-64 MBTs that form the core of our tank fleet,” he said.

According to the expert, among other things, it is necessary to ensure the tank's ability to engage the enemy at night, equip the machine with a reliable protection system, and install a more modern engine.
As UNIAN reported earlier, at the latest meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, its Secretary, Oleksandr Turchynov called the priority task creating missile and rocket arms, which would strengthen defenses of the country's coastline.
In addition, the state will support promising developments in manufacture of heavy howitzer artillery, air defense and communications equipment, and armored vehicles, as well as expand production of ammunition and projectiles.
