Ukraine's railway operator cuts freight transportation by 5.1%, passenger traffic by 4.4% in 2018

Ukraine's railways in 2018 reduced freight transportation by 5.1% against 2017, to 322.3 million tonnes, while cutting passenger transportation, including by Kyiv’s municipal commuter train, by 4.4%, to 157.6 million people.

Rail freight turnover over the period under review fell by 2.9% against 2017, to 186.34 billion tonnes per kilometer, whereas passenger turnover increased by 1.3%, to 248.44 billion passengers per kilometer, according to the State Statistics Service.

Last year, Ukraine's railways transported 267.6 million tonnes of cargo within the country and abroad which was 3.5% down from 2016.

In 2018, timber cargo transportation declined by 14.1%, that of construction materials – by 12.8%, oil and oil products – by 9.3%, grain and milled products – by 7.9%, cement – by 4.5%, chemical and mineral fertilizers – by 3.9%, ferrous metals – by 3.4%, hard coal – by 2.6%, coke – by 2.6%, and ferrous scrap – by 0.9%. At the same time, iron and manganese ores shipments increased by 2.5%.

The report does not include information from temporarily occupied areas in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, and Donbas, it said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the transport enterprises in 2018 cut freight transportation by 2% from 2017, to 624.1 million tonnes, while reducing passenger transportation by 3.5%, to 4.486 billion people.
