Ukraine sees 5.7% decline in new housing in 2018

Some 103,141 new apartments were commissioned last year.

Commissioning of new housing in Ukraine declined by 5.7% in 2018 from 2017, to 8.689 million square meters.

At the same time, housing that was put into operation under the temporary procedure for commissioning houses built without permits accounted for 5.7%, or 498,400 square meters, of total housing commissioned, Ukraine's State Statistics Service said.

Thus, the commissioning of unauthorized housing fell by 11.1%, to 8.191 million square meters.

Over the past year, 5.652 million square meters of housing was commissioned in cities and towns, while 3.037 million square meters of housing was put into operation in the rural area. Some 48.9% of total housing was commissioned as single-family houses, the share of houses with two or more apartments was 51%, while shared households' housing accounted for 0.1%.

Commissioning of housing in the city of Kyiv, as well as in Lviv, Odesa and Kharkiv regions in 2018 accounted for 55.1% of total housing. In particular, 1,255 square meters (14.5% of total housing) was put into operation in Kyiv, while 1,541 square meters (17.7%) was commissioned in Kyiv region.

In total, 103,141 apartments with an average area of 84.2 square meters each were commissioned last year, including 76,200 apartments in cities and towns and 26,900 in the rural area.

The highest growth rates in 2018 were recorded in Kherson region (a 59.8% increase, to 95,100 square meters) and in Chernivtsi region (an increase by 53.7%, to 287,500 square meters).

The State Statistics Service said the data excluded reports from temporarily occupied areas in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, and Russian-occupied districts in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, commissioning of new housing in Ukraine rose by 9% in 2017 from 2016, to 10.206 million square meters.

A total of 9.367 million square meters was put into operation in 2016, which was 15.2% down from 2015.
