Some 1.659 million tonnes of steel was produced in Ukraine in June 2019.
Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises in June 2019 reduced steel production by 3% year-over-year, to 1.659 million tonnes, yet Ukraine retained its 13th place in the rating of global steelmakers, according to the World Steel Association (WSA).
In June 2019, China traditionally maintained its leadership in the ranking of global steel producers, as its output was 87.5 million tonnes (10% up on June 2018).

It was followed by India (9.3 million tonnes, 4% up), Japan (8.8 million tonnes, 0.4% up), the United States (7.3 million tonnes, 3.1% up), South Korea (5.96 million tonnes, 2.6% down), Russia (5.88 million tonnes, 2.6% down), Germany (3.4 million tonnes, 5.8% down), Brazil (2.8 million tonnes, 3.1% down), Turkey (2.7 million tonnes, 11% down), Iran (2.16 million tonnes, 6.1% up), Italy (2.1 million tonnes, 2.5% down), Taiwan (1.96 million tonnes, 0.3% down).
In total, 64 countries included in the WSA rating boosted steel production by 4.6% in June 2019 from June 2018, to 158.98 million tonnes.
In January-June this year, Ukraine increased steel production by 5.2%, year-over-year, to 10.93 million tonnes, remaining 13th on the world steelmakers' ranking.
As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian steelmakers cut steel output by 1.1% in 2018 against 2017, to 21.1 million tonnes, having slid from the 12th to the 13th place in the WSA rating.
UNIAN memo. Ukraine ranked seventh in the WSA rating 2013 in terms of steel output, having produced 30.4 million tonnes. In 2014, the country slid to the 10th place with a steel output of 27.2 million tonnes. Since 2014, two factors have affected domestic steelmakers' activities: hostilities in Donbas, where more than half of steel production facilities are located, and a decline in world prices of raw materials for metallurgy and finished products. They reduced steelmakers' revenue and toughened competition on global markets, which was most evident in 2015. However, Ukraine managed to keep its 10th position in the industry rating in 2015 and 2016.
