President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble has criticized German policy over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, as he understands the concerns of Germany's eastern neighbors.

"To step over our eastern neighbors' views is not one of the best aspects of German policy, as it has largely ruined confidence," he wrote in an article published by Die Welt on Saturday, Sept 7, Deutsche Welle reports.

At the same time, the official addressed the opponents of Nord Stream 2: "From a European point of view, the total sabotage of the project is not a reasonable solution neither," Schäuble said.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which is being built by a number of Russian and European companies, is set to be laid along the Baltic Sea bottom next to the existing Nord Stream 1 pipeline. The construction of the pipeline should be completed before the end of 2019, but it may be delayed for eight months due to issues with obtaining the necessary permits from Denmark.

There is also criticism of the gas pipeline in Germany, while Federal Government mainly supports the implementation of the project, saying that it is a private initiative. At the same time, official Berlin emphasizes the importance of Ukraine continuing to transit Russian gas to Europe once the pipe bypassing it is put into operation.
