Zelensky names Belarus Ukraine's key trading partner

Last year's trade turnover between the countries exceeded US$5 billion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko within the Second Forum of the Regions of Ukraine and Belarus held in the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr, where he said that Belarus is a key trading partner of Ukraine.

"Belarus is our key trading partner. Last year's trade turnover between our countries exceeded US$5 billion. I agree with Alexander Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] – we can and should surpass the mark of $6-$8 billion," Zelensky said at the event on October 4.

The Ukrainian president also noted that the task was addressed to the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. He added that the Ukrainian part of the Commission would be updated soon.

Zelensky named cooperation in the fuel and energy complex, infrastructure and transport projects, industry, industrial cooperation, as well as cooperation in the agro-industrial complex the priorities in the trade and economic relations between Ukraine and Belarus.

According to Zelensky, the countries have great potential for mutual upgrading of enterprises, joint entering the markets of other countries and participation in multilateral projects.

"I invite Belarusian investors to actively cooperate and I want the history of relations between Ukraine and Belarus to be a history of success and progress," he summed up.

As UNIAN reported earlier, during the First Forum of the Regions of Ukraine and Belarus held in October 2018, the then Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the annual trade potential between Ukraine and Belarus was about $10 billion.
