President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has said the extension of the gas transit contract with Russia for 12 months is no longer on the table.

Following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Normandy Summit in Paris December 9, Zelensky is convinced that Kyiv will be able to achieve better conditions in the matter of continuing Russian gas transit to Europe. Thus, positive shifts in the negotiation process are obvious, energy expert Valentyn Zemliansky told the Segodnya newspaper.

"At least in the political part of the discussion of the contract, shifts have been outlined that are likely to become guidelines for negotiators in the future. These are the terms of the contract and the issue of Stockholm [arbitration], where, as far as I understand, certain agreements have also been reached. Therefore, with cautious optimism, we can say that there are certain achievements, but everything will now depend on the results of trilateral negotiations in Brussels," the expert said.
