The U.S. has included in its defense budget bill a set of sanctions that could halt the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine.

Despite the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Kremlin is not going to halt gas transit via Ukraine after the new pipe is launched, support for the bill in Washington will be of great importance to Kyiv, energy expert Valeriy Borovyk has told the Segodnya newspaper.

"Any actions aimed to stop [the construction of Nord Stream 2], create more problems for Gazprom or completely stop the flow, impose personal sanctions on participants – heads of companies and those companies, too – it is always a positive thing for Ukraine," the expert said.

At the same time, he noted that Washington had been dragging for too long with the introduction of sanctions.

"It's a shame that it's being done so late. In this, I see a certain game played by the administration of President [Donald] Trump, who has been noted for his relations with Putin. But any step to create problems for the completion of NS2 is another day of operation of our gas transmission system, it's another day with revenues to our state budget," the expert said.

Earlier, German lobbyists claimed "threat" of U.S. sanctions for peace efforts of the Normandy Four. Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, has already decried the claim.

Earlier the U.S. Congress laid down sanctions against Russian gas pipeline projects bypassing Ukraine – Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream – in the fiscal NDAA 2020.
