Gazprom pays Ukraine for twice the volume of gas pumped

Gas TSO of Ukraine transmitted 2 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia to the EU, having received payment for 4.272 bcm.

Ukraine in January received payment from Russia's Gazprom energy giant for twice the volume of gas actually transmitted to Europe.

Gas TSO of Ukraine transmitted 2 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia to the EU and Moldova, having received payment for 4.272 bcm, thanks to the "pump or pay" principle laid down in the new transit contract signed late December, CEO Serhiy Makogon wrote on Facebook.

According to Makogon, this is the real result of signing a new contract, which is based on European principles.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on December 30, Ukraine and Russia signed a new contract for gas transit to Europe for a period of five years with the possibility of extension for ten years.

The document stipulates that Gazprom must pump a minimum of 65 billion cubic meters of gas through Ukraine in the first year and 40 billion cubic meters each of the next four years.

Naftogaz noted that for the first time in history Ukraine signed a contract with Russia using a pump or pay principle.
