The State Aviation Administration of Ukraine says the number of passengers handled by Ukrainian airports doubled over the past five years.

"The passenger flow in 2019 totaled 24,336,600 people, of whom almost 22 million passengers (+20%) took advantage of international flights, while 2.34 million passengers (+7%) used domestic flights," Ukraine's Center for Transport Strategies (CTS) said on January 24, referring to the Administration's data.

Despite a general growth trend (18.5% up) in 2019, some of the Ukrainian airports reported a decrease in their passenger flows, namely Kryvyi Rih International Airport (21,329 passengers, 2.89% down from 2018 when it also saw a decrease), Vinnytsia International Airport (40,124; 34.09% down), and Ivano-Frankivsk International Airport (104,600; 7.11% down). Even Ukraine's Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany) served a smaller number of passengers (2,617,900; 6.91% down) compared to 2018, when it was in the lead in terms of growing passenger traffic.

Mykolaiv International Airport's impressive passenger flow dynamics (22,700 people; 8767.19% up) was due to the fact that the airport resumed operation at the very end of December 2018 (no comparative base). The same was the case with Poltava Airport (5,036; 420.24% up) and Uzhgorod International Airport (2,782; 441.24% up), which resumed operations in the summer of 2018 and in the spring of 2019, respectively.

It should be noted that Boryspil International Airport in 2019 served more than 15 million passengers, which was a record high number in the airport's history.

As was earlier reported, Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry is willing to increase the share of low-cost airlines in Ukraine to 45% in 2020 and to 63% in subsequent years.
