Coronavirus quarantine brings 17 enterprises of Ukraine's defense industry to standstill

Coronavirus quarantine and related restrictions have brought 17 enterprises that are part of Ukroboronprom, a state-run manufacturer and seller of weapons and military technology, to a standstill.

"The 17 enterprises have introduced the regime of a full or partial standstill. This means that the enterprises continue to function, but do not manufacture and do not repair [military equipment]," Ukroboronprom said in a statement.

In addition, 60 Ukroboronprom-controlled production facilities have reduced the number of active workers by 15,000. Most of the personnel were placed on leave, another 2,000 work remotely.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Ukrainian government has approved restrictive measures to address the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus in Ukraine. They include the introduction of three-week quarantine in educational institutions starting from March 12.

What is more, Ukraine on March 16 closed its border for foreign citizens for two weeks.

On March 17, the subway in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities suspended the service. Intercity and interregional passenger transportation by rail, by air, and by bus in Ukraine stopped on March 18.

The restrictions are not applicable to private vehicles.
