Sales of electric cars in Ukraine grow by third in Jan-March

Sales of electric cars in Ukraine in January-March 2020 grew by a third year-over-year (y-o-y), to 1,700 vehicles.

In March alone, 409 electric vehicles imported into the country received Ukrainian license plates, including 386 passenger cars and 23 commercial ones, the Ukrautoprom Association's press service said on April 6.

"The number of registrations of electric cars declined by 16%, while those of commercial vehicles plunged by almost 40% y-o-y. Such a drop in registrations on the electric car market is due to the fact that used cars account for the lion's share of the imports. In the middle of the last month, their registration was halted over the [coronavirus] quarantine," the report said.

It is noted that the share of imported cars with mileage was 86% (333 units) of electric cars registered in March, whereas used electric commercial vehicles accounted for 100% (23 units) of all registrations in that segment.

However, despite the restrictions related to quarantine measures, the registration of new electric cars in March grew by 36%, to 53 units.

In March, the Nissan Leaf model remained the most popular electric car in Ukraine, as 129 electric cars of this make with mileages received Ukrainian license plates.

The Tesla Model S ranked second with 47 cars registered in Ukraine; only one of them was new.

The Tesla Model 3 car was third: 32 Tesla cars (all used vehicles) were registered in Ukraine.

The Volkswagen е-Golf and Renault Kangoo Z.E. models became fourth with 19 used cars registered each.

The Audi e-tron ranked fifth with 17 new electric cars registered in the country.

As UNIAN reported earlier, sales of electric cars in Ukraine in 2019 soared by almost 1.5 times against 2018, to 7,542 units.
