Russia increases gas transit via Ukraine to EU by almost 20%

Russian energy giant Gazprom continues increasing transit volume of natural gas to its European customers via Ukraine, having submitted an application for transit of 229 mcm of gas on July 6, which is 19% more than on the same day in 2014, Ukrainian gas transport system operator Ukrtransgaz reported.

"The volume of natural gas transit to Europe has increased by 19% compared to the same date last year, with the daily transit volume as of this morning amounting to 229 mcm, against 185 mcm on the same date last year," said the company’s spokesperson Maksym Biliavskiy.

According to Biliavskiy, from July 1 to 4, 904 mcm of natural gas was transmitted to Europe via the territory of Ukraine.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on July 3, Gazprom submitted an application to Ukrtransgaz for transpoting 231 mcm of gas to the European consumers, which is 4% more than the volume ordered on July 2.

Trilateral talks held in Vienna on June 30 between Ukrainian and Russian energy ministers with the participation of Maros Sefcovic, Vice-President of the European Commission on Energy Union, resulted in Ukraine rejecting conditions offered by Moscow. 

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced later that day that the final gas price for Ukraine in the third quarter will amount $247.18 per 1,000 cubic meters, including the discount. Thus, the discount will only amount to $39.97 per 1,000 cubic meters, or 13.92%.

Naftogaz of Ukraine suspended gas purchases from the Russian energy monopoly Gazprom starting July 1.
