Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk insists on an independent audit of national nuclear energy generation company Energoatom, according to a posting on the government's official website.
According to the premier, all answers regarding to Energoatom's operation need to be given transparently.
"Hire auditors, private investigation agencies. I demand transparency in the energy sector. If corruption exists there, if there are facts proven by independent auditors – this is a direct way to being held accountable," he said at an Energy and Coal Industry Ministry board meeting in Kyiv on Tuesday.
According to him, the situation around Energoatom demonstrates that there is the fight for flows of money. "What is more, I see Russian interests behind the fight for Energoatom," he said, noting that a decision was made to diversify nuclear fuel purchases and a real contract was signed with U.S. Westinghouse to considerably broaden cooperation.
"I think Energoatom should become the backbone of the country's energy security. That is why we have been speaking with you for a year already about the need to complete [nuclear] reactors," he said.
"This is one of the most expensive assets of Ukraine's energy system. Therefore my demands are: transparency, the fulfilment of the contract with Westinghouse, the diversification of energy sources and the completion of the [Khmelnytsky nuclear] power units," he added.
