Donors to allocate EUR 100 mln for confinement project at Chornobyl NPP

The Assembly of Contributors will provide Ukraine with the missing EUR 100 million for completing the construction of a New Safe Confinement (NSC) over the Chornobyl plant, Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Voschevskiy said at a briefing on Monday.

"Almost all donors confirmed their additional contribution in order to cover EUR 100 million out of EUR 1.5 billion, which we lacked to complete the work on the project," he said.

According to Voschevskiy, the agreements were reached at an International Donor Conference of the Chornobyl Shelter Fund, as well as at the Assembly of Contributors of the Nuclear Safety Council, which took place in London on July 16 and was attended by the Ukrainian delegation.

Voschevskiy said that donors would allocate the money in the near future, so the completion of the facility will be implemented as scheduled.

"The donor conference has shown that the donors are interested in the implementation of this project in November 2017," he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in April, Chief Project Engineer of the NSC Volodymyr Kashtanov said that the construction of a new safe confinement for the fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was on schedule and would be completed by November 30, 2017.

UNIAN’s memo. The G7 member countries agreed in 1997 to set up the Chornobyl Shelter Fund to help Ukraine build a new containment shelter over the ruins of the Chornobyl NPP's fourth reactor.

In September 2007 the Chornobyl Shelter Fund and the French Group Novarka signed a contract for the construction of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The initial cost of the construction was estimated at EUR 980 million. However, six years later, the estimated construction costs increased by another EUR 500 million.

Then, in the summer of 2014, the Assembly of Contributors to the Chornobyl Shelter Fund decided to increase the additional contribution by the donor countries to EUR 650 million to ensure the successful completion of the NSC construction, which is designed to make the Chornobyl nuclear power plant a safe and environmentally stable facility.
