Dzhemilev: Energy blockade of Crimea to be considered in October

Ukrainian presidential envoy for Crimean Tatar People's affairs and MP from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko Mustafa Dzhemilev said that the issue of "energy blockade" of the Russian-annexed Crimea will be considered in October, according to RFE/RL.

"We expect that the request of the president to abolish the law on free economic zone will be met and we will not need to carry out the blockade by ourselves; the government will do it," he added.

Earlier, the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov said that the "food blockade" of the Russian-annexed Crimea may followed by an energy blockade.

To date, the supply of electricity from Ukraine to Crimea is carried out based on the contracts concluded between Ukrainian and Russian energy suppliers in December 2014.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on September 20, Crimean Tatars initiated the so-called “food blockade” of Crimea, blocking roads in mainland Ukrainian Kherson region near checkpoints on the administrative border with Russian-occupied peninsula. The activists have been blocking trucks with food products from entering Crimea ever since.

The Coordinating Council of the Crimea blockade campaign claims that pedestrians and passenger transport will be allowed to freely cross the administrative border between mainland Ukraine and occupied Crimea.

Members of the Crimean Tatar national movement and representatives of volunteer battalions set up  tent camps near the administrative border saying they will not allow the resumption of food supplies to the occupied territory.

The authorities in Russia and the occupied Crimea condemned these actions.
