Ukraine may lose up to 30% of winter sowing area due to dry weather

The acreage of Ukrainian land sown with winter grain for the 2016 harvest could fall by up to 30% due to excessively dry weather across most of the country, a senior weather forecaster said on Friday, Reuters reported.

A lack of rain in August-October could prompt farmers to cancel winter sowing and sow the areas with maize and sunseed next spring, said Tetyana Adamenko, head of the agriculture department at Ukraine's state weather center, according to Reuters.

Read alsoUkraine seeks foreign investment in agricultureAs UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine had threshed 43.5 million tonnes of grain from an area of 11.7 million hectares by October 5, 2015, with an average grain crop capacity being 37.1 centners, or 3.71 tonnes, per hectare, according to Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Oleksiy Pavlenko.

Grain exports in the current marketing year, from July 2015 to June 2016, are projected by the Agrarian Ministry at 36.8 million tonnes.
