Ukraine starts consultations with EU on Russian trucks transit through Ukraine

Ukraine initiates consultations with representatives of the European Commission and individual EU member states regarding transit of Russian trucks through the Ukrainian territory, Ukraine’s Infrastructure Ministry reported on Sunday.

"In view of the situation with the passage through the territory of Ukraine of cargo transport vehicles which are registered in the Russian Federation, the Infrastructure Ministry has initiated, upon consideration of the issue at a government meeting on February 12, 2016, holding of daily meetings of the Operational Response Headquarters with representatives of the Economic Development Ministry, the State Fiscal Service, the State Border Service, the National Police and other agencies related. The Headquarters will be tasked with a continuous monitoring of the situation and developing an agreed proposal that will be submitted for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers," a statement reads.

At this, the ministry noted that it is also holding technical consultations with representatives of the European Commission and individual EU member states.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on February 11 civil society activists began an indefinite campaign aimed at preventing Russian trucks from crossing international borders from the territory of Ukraine.

According to the activists, the campaign has already started in Zakarpattia, Volyn, Lviv, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr and Sumy regions.

The participants demand recognition of Russia as an aggressor state with regard to all spheres of social and political life of Ukraine. In particular, they demand to prohibit operations of the Russian companies in the territory of Ukraine, termination of any trade relations with the aggressor state, as well as an introduction of a ban on entry into and transit through Ukraine of Russian trucks.

Russian transport authorities announced that Russia had blocked the traffic of Ukrainian transit trucks in its territory in response to the situation with the blockage of the Russian trucks by activists across Ukraine.

According to the Russian Transport Ministry, currently, the traffic of over 100 trucks remains blocked in various regions of Ukraine, while more than 500 trucks are not able to enter the territory of Ukraine from the EU on the way back to Russia.
