Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk does not apply for the post of a governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), believing Valeria Gontareva's successor should not be affiliated with any political forces.
"I'm not going to become the NBU governor. I believe that an absolutely apolitical figure should be heading the NBU," Yatsenyuk said on one of TV shows.

"The decisions that I made at that time were apolitical. We stopped the fall of the national currency and saved the banking system since I was not affiliated with any political force. Today, the head of the National Bank should be a professional economist and banker who would put several tasks before himself. And one of them is to expand the functions of the National Bank," Yatsenyuk said.
Yatsenyuk has said that the NBU is now mainly engaged in the exchange rate stability and curbing inflation. "However, central banks in the developed world also have other purposes. For example, the U.S. Federal Reserve has two more goals, that is the creation of new jobs and launching the economy," Yatsenyuk said, drawing attention to the need to amend the Constitution in this area.

Secondly, the state has become the biggest owner of the country's banks, therefore every bank has to be specialized," Yatsenyuk said.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on February 27, several media outlets reported that after more than two and a half years of heading the National Bank of Ukraine, its Governor Valeria Gontareva had reportedly decided to resign.
At the same time, the NBU press service told UNIAN that reports about the resignation of National Bank Governor Valeria Gontareva were untrue.
