NBU Governor Gontareva goes on long vacation instead of resignation – source

The Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Valeria Gontareva, who submitted a letter of resignation from May 10 to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, is going on a long-term vacation, according to an UNIAN source in the NBU.

The appointment of Gontareva's successor is postponed to autumn. First Deputy Governor Yakiv Smolii will run the NBU for the time of Gontareva's absence, the source said.

However, the National Bank has not yet officially confirmed the information.

Previously the market participants interviewed by UNIAN said Chairman of the Board of Raiffeisen Bank Aval Volodymyr Lavrenchuk could become Gontareva's successor. However, neither Lavrenchuk nor the bank's press service, or the presidential administration had officially confirmed the fact of negotiations on this matter.

As UNIAN reported, Gontareva announced her resignation on April 10. According to her, no other changes in the composition of the NBU Board and the policy of the regulator are foreseen.

Gontareva was appointed chief banker after the Ukrainian parliament had supported Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's motion of June 19, 2014, to dismiss the then NBU Governor Stepan Kubiv.
