Law on e-fare in public transport comes into force in Ukraine

A law on the introduction of an electronic ticket in urban passenger transport has come into force in Ukraine today, May 7, according to the Verkhovna Rada's website.

The system will provide an opportunity for convenient and quick payments, as well as travel control. In addition, the delays at public transport stops will be reduced. This will also allow the introduction of a variety of flexible tariff systems, the lawmakers said.

What is more, the document sets forth the mandatory provision of passengers entitled to benefits with relevant electronic tickets.

Read alsoPoroshenko enacts law on e-fare in public transport As UNIAN reported earlier, on January 17, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law allowing local authorities to introduce automated fare collection systems, including an electronic ticket, in urban and suburban passenger transport.

The electronic fare payment system is expected to improve the profitability of public transport and lead to a reduction in budget financing.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko enacted the relevant law In February. Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan announced that a pilot project on e-ticket in urban passenger transport would be implemented in several large cities, including Lviv and Dnipro.
