NBU first deputy governor to run regulator from May 11 (updated)

Head of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeria Gontareva today, May 10, has her last working day in the office. From May 11 and until the appointment of a new NBU governor, her duties will be performed by First Deputy Head of the NBU Yakiv Smolii, the Bank’s press service told UNIAN.

"Valeria Gontareva leaves behind all her professional duties at the National Bank and goes on forced leave until the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decides on her resignation," the report says.

At the same time, the National Bank stressed Gontareva’s readiness to report to the Verkhovna Rada ahead of her dismissal, as required by the procedure for dismissal of the NBU governor, at the invitation of the parliament.

The regulator also reminded that within the framework of the current legislation, the president of Ukraine will take a decision on the resignation of the NBU head, which the Verkhovna Rada has to approve.

As UNIAN reported, Gontareva on April 10 announced her resignation. According to her, no other changes in the composition of the NBU Board and the policy of the regulator are foreseen.

On May 5, an UNIAN source in the National Bank of Ukraine reported that Gontareva was going on a long-term vacation from May 10, and First Deputy Governor Yakiv Smolii would run the NBU for the time of her absence.

Previously the market participants interviewed by UNIAN said Chairman of the Board of Raiffeisen Bank Aval Volodymyr Lavrenchuk could become Gontareva's successor.

According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the NBU governor shall be appointed by the parliament upon recommendation by the president for a period of seven years.
