Ukraine boosts dairy exports by almost 80% in H1

Dairy food exports from Ukraine in January-June 2017 (H1) grew by 76.6% year-over-year (y-o-y), to US$117.2 million, according to the Ukrainian Food Export Board (UFEB).

Key export staples over the period under review were milk and condensed cream (35% or $40.4 million) and creamery butter (38% or $44.8 million), UFEB's analytical department said.

Cheeses and whey accounted for 12% of export earnings ($14.3 million and $3.6 million, respectively), while the share of non-condensed milk and cream was 2% ($2.6 million) and that of fermented milk products 1% ($1.5 million).

Dairy exports in physical terms totaled 63,200 tonnes. Non-condensed milk and cream accounted for 37% of supplies (23,300 tonnes), while creamery butter for 19% (12,300 tonnes).

Milk whey accounted for 28% of exports in physical terms (17,900 tonnes), cheese for 7% (4,120 tonnes), non-condensed milk and cream for 6% (4,090 tonnes), and fermented milk products for 2% (1,500 tonnes).

Thus, the five largest exporters accounted for 39% of dairy products shipments abroad in January-June 2017.

The top five exporters of creamery butter were as follows: Roshen's Vinnytsia dairy plant (12%) Starokostiantynivsky dairy plant (7%), Yahotyn creamery butter factory (7%), Veselynivsky skimmed milk plant (3%), and Ichnya milk cannery (2%). These companies' share in creamery butter exports was 32% in the first half of 2017.

At the same time, the top five companies accounting for 72% of total cheese exports in physical terms, were KOMO-Export (19%), Cheese Club company (17%), Lactalis-Ukraine subsidiary (15%), Bel Shostka Ukraine (13%), and Milkiland-Ukraine (7%).

As UNIAN reported earlier, cheese exports from Ukraine totaled 8,000 tonnes in 2016, which was 25.9% down from 2015. Exports of non-condensed milk and cream increased by 19.3%, to 10,500 tonnes, those of creamery butter by 2.5%, to 12,100 tonnes, while exports of condensed milk and cream fell by 17.6%, to 51,900 tonnes.
