Ukrzaliznytsia mulls purchase of 30 GE locomotives to be assembled in Ukraine

Ukrainian state-run railways operator JSC Ukrzaliznytsia is negotiating with U.S.-based General Electric Transportation, a division of General Electric Corporation, for the large-unit assembly of locomotives at the capacities of PJSC Kryukov Railway Car Building Works (KRCBW), according to Deputy Director of the Department of Strategic Planning at Ukrzaliznytsia, Oleksandr Malakov.

"According to Ukrzaliznytsia's plan, 30 new diesel locomotives are scheduled to be purchased in 2018. Negotiations are now underway with General Electric on the large-unit assembly of these locomotives at the capacities of the KRCBW," he said at a press conference in the European Business Association.

At the same time, Malakov noted that the agreement provides for the production of 30 diesel locomotives in the next year.

"The task is to bring localization of locomotives [production] in Ukraine to the level of 40%. The contract is to have been concluded by year-end," he said.

On October 3, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with President and CEO of U.S. General Electric Transportation Jamie Miller. They touched, among other things, on prospects for the participation of the American side in the modernization of Ukrzaliznytsia.

This agreement foresees expansion of cooperation in the development and modernization of diesel locomotives based on the advanced technologies of General Electric.
