Chairperson of the All-Ukrainian Environmental League Tetiana Tymochko has said the Dnipro River has become a "fragmented waterway" over the construction of multiple water-development facilities, including the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP).

"The Dnipro River, which was our largest artery, has lost its significance as a river. It is a fragmented water resource blocked by dams, HPP hydraulic structures," she told the Ukrainian online news outlet Obozrevatel.

In this context, the ecologist said the construction of hydraulic structures in Ukraine had posed a risk from the very beginning and had no prospect in terms of security.

"We have big problems with the rivers of Ukraine. They are losing flow, facing siltation, changing the hydrological regime, this leads to deterioration in water quality. We are losing the rivers over these hydraulic structures," Tymochko said.

She added the construction of the Kaniv Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) on the Dnipro River would make the existing risks even ten times bigger.
