Electricity imports into Ukraine decline by 78.3% in May

Electricity exports were the lowest in the past 3.5 years since September 2016.

Electricity imports into Ukraine declined by 78.3% in May 2020 from April 2020 and by 94.1% from January 2020, to 33.1 million kWh.

The import value in May has become the lowest since July 2019 after an opportunity to legally import electricity, NPC Ukrenergo said on its website on May 15.

At the same time, electricity imports into the trade zone of Ukraine's integrated power grids, which are synchronized with the power grids of Russia, Belarus and Moldova, was not carried out in May. All imports were carried out into the trade zone of the so-called energy island of Burshtyn thermal power plant, which is in simultaneous operation with the European energy association ENTSO-E.

Hungary accounted for the lion's share of electricity imports, having supplied 16.4 million kWh. Another 14.4 million kWh was imported from Slovakia and 2.3 million kWh from Romania. Electricity exports from Ukraine in May 2020 stood at 125.1 million kWh, which was 47.4% down on April 2020.

Electricity exports over the period under review were the lowest in the past 3.5 years since September 2016. Almost the entire amount of electricity, 124.9 million kWh, was exported to Poland.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine boosted foreign exchange earnings from electricity exports by 14% in 2019 against 2018, up to US$379 million.
