Churiy's term in office expires on July 10, 2020. According to the law on the National Bank, he will be able to hold his current position until his successor takes office.

Churiy has served as the NBU Deputy Governor since June 2015. Prior to that, he was the Director of the NBU Open Market Operations Department. The official manages open market operations, currency regulation, and activities of the National Bank's Depository.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on July 1, 2020, Smolii submitted to the Ukrainian president a resignation letter, explaining his move by a long-standing systematic political pressure, which he said made it impossible for him to effectively fulfill his duties.

On July 3, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, supported the motion by President Volodymyr Zelensky to dismiss Smolii from the post of NBU Governor. First Deputy Governor of the NBU Kateryna Rozhkova has assumed duties of acting NBU Governor until the new chief is appointed.
