The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection in the coming weeks will present a plan for the development of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, says Olha Buslavets, the newly appointed acting energy minister.

"Today, the issue of safety in the exclusion zone remains in the focus of both Ukraine and the international community. After all, everything that happens in the Chornobyl region directly or indirectly affects the life and development of all of Europe. That is why the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine is constantly working to strengthen safety measures in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. In the coming weeks, the Ministry will submit for consideration by President and the Cabinet of Ministers an action plan for this territory, in particular, on strengthening fire-fighting measures," Buslavets wrote on Facebook.

She emphasized that the plan provides for a number of measures to bring the Shelter site into a safer condition by dismantling the unstable elements of the old confinement and the remains of the Chornobyl NPP's Unit 4.

Buslavets added that the ministry was preparing a package of actions aimed at stabilizing the Ukrainian energy system.

"Due to the global economic crisis and the COVID-19 epidemic, the industry is facing a new challenge – the need to ensure the technical balance of the power system, safe operation of nuclear power plants, and the reliable supply of electricity to consumers. To this end, the ministry attracts leading Ukrainian experts to cooperation," Olha Buslavets emphasized.

She also noted that the plan is part and a continuation of the previously established strategy for the safe operation of nuclear facilities.
