Most of Ukrainians say it is better not to borrow money from IMF – poll

Almost a quarter agree that cooperation with the Fund is expedient.

Most of Ukrainians say they do not support Ukraine's borrowing money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to findings of a June poll conducted by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

Pollees were asked to share their opinion whether it is expedient for Ukraine to cooperate with the IMF, KIIS said.

Thus, 61% of respondents say it is better now not to cooperate with the IMF and not to take new loans. Compared to April, when the previous poll on this subject was held, the share of people who think so increased by 15 percentage points (from 46% to 61%).

Some 24% of Ukrainians polled in June agree that it is better to cooperate with the IMF, taking new loans. Compared to April, the share of the people who think so decreased by eight percentage points (from 32% to 24%).

The findings of the poll were posted by the Institute on its website on June 29.

As UNIAN reported, the IMF Executive Board on June 9, 2020, approved an 18-month Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) for Ukraine with financing equivalent to SDR 3.6 billion, or about US$5 billion, aimed at helping the country overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 12, Ukraine received the first disbursement of the IMF loan under the new 18-month cooperation program.

*** The survey was conducted from June 20 to June 23 via interviews by phone based on a random selection of mobile numbers. The sample is representative of the adult population (aged 18 and older) in Ukraine. The samples do not cover areas that are temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities – the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and certain districts in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. During the survey, 2,000 interviews were conducted. The margin of error does not exceed 2.2% for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% for indicators close to 25%, 1.4% for indicators close to 10%.
