Ukrainian farmers have completed the sowing of early spring crops on an area of 11.2 million hectares (ha), which is 72% of the forecast, and continue sowing late crops.

"Between April 23 and May 4, agrarians sowed 3.5 million ha with spring grain, leguminous and industrial crops," the press service of Ukraine's Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture has said. "As of May 4, the sowing of early spring crops was over, while sowing of late crops is under way."

"Field works were carried out on an area of 11.2 million ha, which was 72% of the planned area (15.5 million ha)," it added.

In particular, farmers sowed spring wheat on 181,500 of the planned 184,500 ha, spring barley was sown on 1.46 million of the planned 1.51 million ha, maize on 3.95 million of the planned 5.38 million ha.

Sugar beets crops cover 179,000 of the planned 209,000 ha, sunflower crops were sown on 4.4 million of the planned 6.2 million ha, and soybean crops on 545,000 of the projected 1.44 million ha.

The ministry's updated forecast says the area to be sown with major crops will increase by 600,000 ha compared to 2019 and will total 15.5 million ha.

"According to forecasts, the share of maize and sunflower in the structure of crops in the spring group will increase, while that of barley, soybeans and sugar beets will decrease," it said.
