Over 800,000 offences recorded by traffic speed cameras in Ukraine in three months

Some 77% of drivers who violate the traffic rules pay fines, which shows a high level of their responsibility.

First Deputy Chief of the Patrol Police Department Oleksiy Biloshytsky has said 833,949 offences were recorded in the first three months after a traffic speed camera system had been launched in Ukraine.

"During the operation of the traffic speed camera system, which was launched on June 1, 2020, we issued 833,949 reports on speed violations. [Fines related to] 645,526 cases have already been paid off," he said at a press conference at the Interior Ministry on September 8.

According to Biloshytsky, 77% of drivers who violate the traffic rules pay fines, which shows a high level of their responsibility.

Grace period for payment of fines

Biloshytsky reiterated the grace period in this regard: a driver pays half of a fine within 10 banking days from the date of its issuance.

At the same time, more than 25,000 materials were submitted to the State Executive Service for enforcement of fines in court.

Background

  • The first speed enforcement cameras started operating at 00:01 on June 1. The equipment was installed in the capital city of Kyiv and on Kyiv region's highways, exclusively in places where the number of traffic accidents with serious consequences is the highest.
  • The system was supposed to start operating from May 1, but its launch was postponed over the coronavirus-related quarantine.
  • Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said a traffic speed camera system in Kyiv had registered 262 cases of speed violations within the first eight minutes.
  • On July 30, it was reported additional cameras would be installed on Ukrainian roads to record compliance with speed limits and control drivers.
