The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has tightened liability for traffic rules violations, including driving under influence (DUI), having passed bill No. 2695.
The document was backed by 325 MPs, an UNIAN correspondent reported on February 16.

The law stipulates amendments in the Code of Administrative Offenses, providing for a fine of up to 1,000 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (UAH 17,000/US$608) for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants, or under the influence of drugs reducing attention and reaction span. The same penalty is provided for handing the wheel to a person under the influence of alcohol, as well as in the case where a motorist refuses to undergo a DUI test.
Repeated violation during the year involves a fine of 2,000 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (UAH 34,000/US$1,216) with a three-year revocation of a driver's license and a paid seizure of vehicle, or without such measure. Another form of punishment laid down is a 10-day administrative arrest with a three-year revocation of a driver's license with possible paid confiscation of a vehicle.
