Public debt shrinks by 2.7% to almost US$83 bln in Sept

In hryvnia equivalent, debt increased by UAH 4.55 billion.

Ukraine's Finance Ministry says the country's public and government-guaranteed debt, estimated in the hryvnia, Ukraine's national currency, grew by 0.2% to UAH 2,345 trillion (US$82.7 billion) in September 2020, while that in the U.S. dollar equivalent shrank by 2.7% to US$82.89 billion.

"In September 2020, the public and government-guaranteed debt in hryvnia equivalent increased by UAH 4.55 billion [US$160.6 million], while declining by US$2.31 billion in the U.S. dollar equivalent," the ministry said on its website.

The public internal debt was UAH 878.25 billion, or US$31.03 billion (37.44% of the total).

Government-guaranteed debt

Ukraine's government-guaranteed debt stood at UAH 280.12 billion, or US$9.90 billion (11.94% of the total public and government-guaranteed debt), including: government-guaranteed external debt at UAH 255.88 billion, or US$9.04 billion (10.91%) and government-guaranteed internal debt at UAH 24.24 billion, or US$860 million (1.03% of the total).

Ukraine's public debt: Developments

  • The country's public and government-guaranteed debt estimated in the hryvnia was down by 2.7% to UAH 2,196 trillion (US$77.5 billion) in April 2020, while that in the U.S. dollar equivalent rose by 1.3% to US$81.4 billion.
  • The public and government-guaranteed debt estimated in the national currency grew by 0.59% to UAH 2,209 trillion (US$77.9 billion) in May 2020, while that in the U.S. dollar equivalent was up by 0.83% to US$82.12 billion.
  • The debt estimated in the hryvnia increased by 3.8% to UAH 2,355 trillion (US$83.1 billion) in July 2020, slightly growing in the U.S. dollar equivalent, i.e. by 0.4% to US$85.05 billion.
  • The country's public and government-guaranteed debt, estimated in the hryvnia shrank by 0.7% to UAH 2,338 trillion (US$82.5 billion) in August 2020, while that in the U.S. dollar equivalent rose by 0.6% to US$85.10 billion.
  • The national budget for 2020 foresees UAH 423 billion, or US$14.9 billion, to repay state debt.
  • Ukraine's state and government-guaranteed debt in 2019 increased in dollar terms by US$6.05 billion, or 7.7%, to US$84.36 billion.
  • Public debt in the hryvnia equivalent shrank by UAH 170.17 billion (US$6 billion), or 7.8%, in the past year, to UAH 1.998 trillion (US$70.5 billion).
  • The debt-to-GDP ratio as of January 1, 2020, stood at 50%.
