Ukrainian Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko says the ministry has drafted a bill to increase fines for speed violations on highways.

For example, it is proposed that drivers who drive 50 kmh over the limit be fined UAH 3,400 (US$128), the RBC Ukraine news agency wrote on June 25.

Gerashchenko notes that the existing speeding fine amounts to UAH 127.5 (US$4.78) if paid within 10 days, while that for driving 50 kmh over the limit stands at UAH 510 (US$19.14).

The official suggested imposing fines by the model introduced in Finland or Switzerland, where the amount is calculated depending on violators' income. "We have to raise the ceiling for fines," he said.

Control over traffic violations at intersections and in public transport lanes will also be stepped up from July 1, Gerashchenko said.

As UNIAN reported, on June 13, cameras spotted a speeding driver who broke speed limit 12 times within 24 hours.
