Medical expert detained for bribery in Kyiv region

Kyiv Sviatoshynskiy local prosecutor's office together with Kyiv police have detained a chairman and a secretary of the medical-social expert commission (MSEC) upon receiving a bribe for approving the disability status for one of the applicants, the press service of the Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv region told UNIAN.

"It was established that a woman with a third group of disability applied to a medical and social expert commission. Her health condition allowed the expert committee to consider assigning the second group of disability [providing for higher social payments]. However, the chairman and secretary of the commission extorted for their services some UAH 35,000. The officials received the bribe money in two tranches. Today, upon the receipt of the second part of the sum in the amount of UAH 30,000, the officials were detained," the report says.

Criminal proceedings are initiated under Part 3 Article 368 (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an undue advantage by an official) of the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years, with disqualification from holding certain positions or engaging in certain activities for up to 3 years, with the confiscation of property.
