Vyshyvanka Day in Ukraine

This year's "World Vyshyvanka Day" is celebrated on May 19. Ordinary Ukrainians, famous people, politicians, members of diplomatic missions in different parts of Ukraine and across the world take pictures sporting traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts - "vyshyvankas."

The idea of a "World Vyshyvanka Day" originated in 2006 among the students of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of the Chernivtsi University. Over the past 10 years, the tradition has spread all over Ukraine and even beyond.

The Day is not tied to any state or religious holiday, being celebrated every third Thursday of May. On this day, people wear vyshyvankas to their offices or classes. Flash mobs and other themed creative events are also held this day.
