Crimea started facing the lack of pretrial detention facilities after it was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Russia plans to build a new pretrial detention center in occupied Crimea; it will be able to accommodate 1,500 detainees.
The facility will be located in Simferopol district and will be built in two phases, according to the Russian state procurement website.

About 40,800 square meters will be built for 1,000 detainees during to the first phase. Another 13,600 square meters will be commissioned later and will be designed for 500 detainees.
Some RUR 3 billion, or nearly US$47.4 million, will be allocated under the project from the federal budget.
As the Krym.Realii media portal said, Crimea started facing the problem of "overcrowded" pretrial detention centers after it was annexed by Russia in 2014. The only detention center is located in the city of Simferopol and is unable to accommodate all the people detained by the Russia-controlled occupying authorities.
