The Chairman of Russian Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin considers it necessary to exclude those clauses from the Russian Constitution that define international law as an integral part of the legal system, a Russian government daily newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
Bastrykin also said he supported the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Russia, which allowed the Russian authorities to defy decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), according to the newspaper.
"It is a proper, justified and most importantly, of course, legal solution. This position of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation is fully consistent with the Constitution of the Russian Federation ..." Bastrykin said.
According to him, such practice exists in Germany, Britain, Italy and the United States.
As earlier reported, on July 14, the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation made a ruling that Russia is not obliged to implement the rulings of the ECHR, although it remains under its jurisdiction. As specified on the website of the court, Russia can defy the rulings of the ECHR if they are deemed as contradicting the Russian Constitution.
