ATO 'cyborg' to work for Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin has appointed Maksym Hryschuk, a former participant in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in Donbas, as First Deputy Head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Shokin's media liaison office told an UNIAN correspondent.

He was among the three nominees shortlisted by the selection committee and later considered by Chief of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office Nazar Kholodnytsky. Hryschuk's competitors were prosecutor from the Prosecutor General's Office Oleksandr Novikov and prosecutor from the Cherkasy prosecutor's office Volodymyr Kryvenko.

Having interviewed the nominees and studied their profiles, Kholodnytsky on Friday, December 4, chose one of the candidates proposed by the commission, Hryschuk, and sent his candidacy for final approval by the Prosecutor General.

On the same day, December 4, Shokin appointed Hryschuk First Deputy Head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the report says.

Hryschuk, a participant in the ATO, was among those Ukrainian troops who were defending Donetsk Airport from the end of May 2014 to the end of January 2015, and were later dubbed "cyborgs."

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office was set up by the Prosecutor General on September 22.

Its mission is to oversee how laws are observed during pre-trial investigations conducted by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Kholodnytsky was appointed Deputy Prosecutor General and chief of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office on November 30.

Hryschuk was among Kholodnytsky's competitors for the positon of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor.
