The Council of Europe's human rights mission to Crimea, led by Swiss diplomat Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann, has returned to Strasbourg after a seven-day visit to the peninsula, the press service of the Council of Europe told an UNIAN correspondent.
Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland today informed the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers that the delegation met representatives from all sectors in Crimea. More than 50 meetings were held in several locations including Simferopol, Yalta, Sebastopol and Bakhchisaray. Ambassador Stoudmann was also able to visit Akhtem Chiygoz, Vice Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, who is imprisoned in Simferopol.

Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann visited Crimea during the period January 25-31. The purpose of the mission was to objectively assess the human rights and rule of law situation in the peninsula and to prepare a report containing recommendations in a number of key areas within the Council of Europe mandate.
