Saakashvili claims passport stolen at checkpoint, applies for protection to legalize stay in Ukraine

Former chairman of the Odesa Regional State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili during his speech in Lviv on Monday has claimed that the Ukrainian border guards did not want to take his travel document for verification or accept his application to the State Migration Service, and then the police allegedly “stole” his passport, which he “left on the bus,” an UNIAN correspondent reports.

"I crossed the Polish border with a valid Ukrainian passport, the Poles stamped it. I came to the Ukrainians, gave my passport so that they either refuse or accept it. They said: ‘We will not take your passport.’ Then I say: ‘Take my application for protection.’ They wouldn’t accept it, either," Saakashvili said at a briefing.

At the same time, he added that his stay in Ukraine was legal.

The police came, searched the bus, and stole my passport. I have no idea where it is now. This morning my lawyer brought to the migration service of Ukraine my application for protection from the Ukrainian state. That is, I am now legally staying in Ukraine," Saakashvili claimed.
