Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine, chief military prosecutor Anatoliy Matios claims that the Russian special services were planning to make assassination attempts on 1,600 members of the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and high-ranking officials.
"Some 1,600 law enforcement officers and statesmen of Ukraine were the targets of the special services of the neighboring country and of the so-called Center for Special Operations of the [self-proclaimed Donbas republics] 'DPR' and 'LPR.' I can confirm this. The leaders of the state were also targeted. They were able to track down the whereabouts and movement of so many people in real time thanks to equipment that could hardly be found at a post exchange in the 'DPR' and 'LPR,'" Matios said at a briefing on Wednesday, apparently hinting that the equipment originated from Russia.
He also said that Deputy Chief of Ukraine's National Police Viacheslav Abroskin was also supposed to be the subject of an assassination attempt prior to the murder of Colonel Maksym Shapoval.
