Ukraine's Security and Defense Council endorses draft law on national security

The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine has endorsed the draft law "On the National Security of Ukraine," which introduces civilian control over the nation's security and defense sector, according to the NSDC's press service.

The document was developed in close cooperation with experts from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the United States and the European Union in order to bring Ukrainian legislation in line with the standards of NATO member countries, the NSDC told UNIAN.

After adoption by parliament, this law should become the basis for developing and amending legislation in the field of national security and defense.

Read alsoTurchynov: Ukraine meets all criteria for NATO’s Enhanced Opportunities ProgramAs NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov said, the Law "On the National Security of Ukraine" should become an umbrella framework and synchronize all implemented and scheduled reforms in Ukraine's security and defense sector.

It should also "embrace not only the basic principles of national security but also the issues of democratic civil control and guidelines for planning in these areas," he said.

In his words, the draft law is aimed at boosting the effectiveness of all the components of the security and defense sector in accordance with the norms and standards of NATO and the EU.

"The early adoption of this bill should be an important element in safeguarding Ukrainian statehood and counteracting Russian aggression," Turchynov said.
