Zelensky tells government to prepare for Oct 25 local elections across Ukraine amid COVID-19 restrictions

The head of state noted the need to work out mechanisms, procedures, and funding in order to protect Ukrainians and give them the opportunity to express their will at the polls.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed the relevant authorities to prepare for the holding of local elections on October 25 amid restrictions imposed due to the spread of COVID-19.

Zelensky issued the instructions during a regular conference call on Thursday, the President's Office reported.

"It is obvious that the upcoming elections will be held against the background of certain restrictions due to coronavirus infection, and now we need to think over mechanisms, procedures, and funding to protect Ukrainians and give them the opportunity to freely vote for their candidates," Zelensky said.

In turn, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov drew attention to ensuring a sufficient number of forces to protect public order during voting.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on July 15, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution scheduling the next local elections for October 25, 2020.
