High tide of Ukraine's anti-graft efforts catches corrupt police official off guard

On Tuesday, August 22, the law enforcers detained the head of the security police department, Police General Serhiy Budnyk, caught red-handed while receiving a bribe totaling UAH 96,000 (approximately $3,700), the press service of the National Police of Ukraine has reported.

"As part of the criminal investigation, the law enforcers discovered that the police officer, in addition to official fees for physical security services, demanded from a Kyiv resident an additional, and illegal, monthly payment worth over UAH 80,000, to be handed over through an intermediary," the report says.

It is noted that the raid sting operation was carried out by the operatives of the Internal Security Department of the National Police of Ukraine together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Main Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine.

The high profile arrest comes amid vocal calls by Ukraine's international partners to boost anti-corruption efforts and pursue the reform, including that of the law enforcement system.
