Vatican Radio: Pope notes tragedy of Holodomor, prays for peace in Ukraine

Pope Francis on Sunday greeted pilgrims from around the world who were gathered in Saint Peter's Square for the weekly Angelus, according to Vatican Radio.

The Holy Father had particular greetings for members of the Ukrainian community who are commemorating "the tragedy of the Holodomor, the death by starvation provoked by the Stalinist regime with millions of victims," according to Vatican Radio.

In the 20th century, the Ukrainians experienced three famines: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and the famine of 1946-1947. However, the one that brought most losses was the Holodomor of 1932-1933 – the genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by the totalitarian Communist regime of the Soviet Union.
